The Republic of Northern Osetia-Alania is a subject of the Russian Federation. It is situated on the northern part of the Great Caucasus and adjacent territories - plains and, partially, in the Northern Valley of Terek river (Mozdok region). It covers the surface of 8 000 sq. Km; its population was 672000 in the beginning of 1996, with density equal to 140 people per 1 sq.km. (average population density in Russia being equal to 8).
